What is Electronic Arts going to do with the Star Wars license?

On E3 2014 EA Dice showed off a teaser for Star Wars Battlefront, a reimagination of the two game series developed by Pandemic. Star Wars Battlefront was then released in Q4 of 2015. The game received mixed reviews, due to the game playing well, but the content was lacking quite a bit. With some free updates Dice fixed the issue and Star Wars Battlefront is now a well round out game. There is still content coming for Star Wars Battlefront with free updates and the three expansions, which are to come this and next year. The Season Pass will include a Bespin Expansion, a Death Star Expansion and a mysterious Expansion, which will be announced later this year.

Continuation of a successful franchise

Because the release of Star Wars Battlefront was so successful with over 14 million sold copies, EA decided to give Dice another opportunity for developing a successor, which will be called Star Wars Battlefront 2.
On an earnings call earlier this week, EA’s CFO Blake Jorgensen announced that Star Wars Battlefront 2 will have even bigger and more beautiful maps than the first game, which maps were already had an astonishing look. In addition to that he said that the game would release sometime in 2017 and it will feature content from the new Star Wars movies Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: Episode 8. Therefore the game will be sole focusing on the battles between the First Order and the Resistance.

New Star Wars games are on the horizon

In the earnings call Jorgensen mentioned that EA will release a new Star Wars game every year for the next three to four years. I think that is a great marketing move, but it certainly does not give the developers enough time to develop a bug free game.
The first of the three to four games will be developed by Visceral Games, which already had a project in development some few years back called Star Wars 1313, which was an attempt to have a third person shooter with a great story. The game should have been a bit like the Uncharted series. But the project got canceled during the take over of Disney over the Star Wars license.
Electronic Arts now decided to give Visceral Games another shot for making a game. There is not much know about the game, except the fact that it will release sometime in 2017.
I personally think they will develop an open-World third Person shooter/RPG, but that is just what would make sense to me from a business point of view.

I am already really excited about the new Star Wars games. Although EA haven’t made a great job in the past couple of years I think they will be able to develop great Star Wars games for us all to play. I hope you are just excited as I am.

  1. I think that Star Wars Battlefront has to little Content for such a high price, in Comparison to other first/third person view shooters. I miss an offline Part, the few Missions your able to play are to short.
