On the 18th of May Warner Bros. announced that they will be releasing remakes for the first two Batman titles in a bundle. The Bundle will be called Batman: Return to Arkham and it will include Batman: Arkham Asylum (2009) and Batman: Arkham City (2011) both developed by Rocksteady. The games will be completely remastered in the Unreal Engine 4. That means beautiful graphics!
Batman: Return to Arkham will be released for Playstation 4 and Xbox One on the 28th of July at a price tag of 49,99 Euro including every piece of DLC for both titles.
How good are the games?
If you for some reason have not played one of the two titles, you missed out big time. Both games were trend setting for the third person Action-Adventure market. They both received a 91 Metacritic score, which is fairly remarkable.
The Batman games have a Story-line independent from the Batman movies, making them really refreshing. Although every game plays in the same Story-line, the new Batman titles can not hold up with the two “originals”.
Gameplay wise the two games feature many innovative ideas aswell as an Open-World of astonishing size for the time.
Will there be anything new except the graphics improvements?
No there will be no further changes. That is a good and a bad thing at the same time. On the one hand it’s bad, because Rocksteady missed out on a good opportunity to rework some of the thing they were not happy about.
On the other hand it’s good, because they did not change anything concerning the experience the game offers. That brings some certain aspect of nostalgia with it aswell as the fact that the consumer knows what they are offered.
Not bringing in new features was probably the smarter choice from a business standpoint, as they did not have to spend too much time on the game, except for the graphics overhaul.
I would have liked Rocksteady to bring in some additional features to the game to give the game some kind of fresh feeling. The game now could feel a bit dull for the gamers who already played the game.
I think it’s great that Warner Bros and Rocksteady are offering us the opportunity to experience these “old classics” on the new generation of consoles with a complete graphics overhaul. Although I would have liked them to release the game overhauls for the PC version, as graphic improvements benefit the PC the most. That does not say the game doesn’t look great on the PS3 and Xbox 360, because they really looked very good. Anyways. I think it’s a must buy for everyone who not played the first two Batman titles Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City.
